ANDERSON WRANGLE

HOME AND GARDEN SERIES

HOME AND GARDEN SERIES | Artist Statement

"I was thinking about the abstract natural forms in oriental carpets, and design motifs, and started making photographs that were ideas as much as observations.  I tried to make the outside in, and the inside out.  The idea itself is simple, but I want the pictures to be interesting, complicated and beautiful.  In our The gardens and home we really use an abstract idea of nature.  And the house and the garden really help to order one another, and they do this by opposeing one another in a way.  I like to think that the pictures are like puzzles, like surprising surreal moments which can only exist in the photograph.  I also like that the things in the photographs are ephemeral, and really fragile.  The photograph, though, feel substantial, quiet and lasting."

OUTER BANKS SERIES

OUTER BANKS SERIES | Artist Statement

"My mother and I drove the length of the Outer Banks when I was fifteen. I remember standing on the sliver of white sand amidst susurrating grass, staring out at the blue sea and sky. It was serene and difficult to take in. The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a place at an extreme limit of geographic possibility, threatened by rising seas due to climate change and hampered in its natural capacity for regrowth by development. This environment is almost not there, and these photographs describe these fragile barrier islands."

FOREST SERIES

FOREST SERIES | Artist Statement

The photographs in the Forest series were photographed over three winters along the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Pickens and Oconee Counties in South Carolina and Jackson and Transylvania Counties in North Carolina.  I have lived and worked in this region since 1998, and these photographs originated as a way to capture my experience hiking, fishing, climbing, photographing, and generally exploring here.  It is hard to find an unobstructed grand view in these Eastern forestexcept on cliff edges, and I wanted to make photographs which were true to the sense of being deep in the forest.   I wanted to capture the density, complexity and beauty unique to these mountains.  In the spring and summer the foliage is so dense one cannot see through or out of the wood.  The trails at these times of year are often described as green tunnels.  I wanted to work in the winter, when you can see through the forest, in a way that is almost like an x-ray.  I used large format 4x5 film to amplifydetail, line quality, and intense delineated form.  One aspect of my formal strategy was to create photographs which do not have isolated subjects. The subject is all over, even and unified.  Attention is distributed across the image and held in suspension, reflecting the experience of vision, attention,  and understanding of the place. These are intensely personal images for me, and I hope they can speak to you, and offer an image which can last, and unfold in different ways over the years.

ABOUT ANDERSON WRANGLE

Anderson Wrangle (b. 1971) is an American photographer and educator based in South Carolina. He earned a B.A. from the University of the South and an M.F.A. from the University of Houston. Wrangle’s work explores the relationship between humans and the natural world, often through images that blur the line between documentary and constructed reality. His photographs span landscape, still life, and conceptual modes, unified by quiet intensity and environmental awareness.

An Associate Professor of Art at Clemson University, Wrangle has shaped a generation of photographers through teaching and mentorship. His series, including The Outer Banks and Savannah River Basin, reflect his connection to Southern landscapes and the tensions that shape them. With deliberate framing and subtle intervention, his work invites reflection on our impact, presence, and place in the environments we inhabit.
