ABOUT THE ARTIST

Karen Delaney is a sculptor whose work bridges architectural form and organic movement, shaped by decades of experience working in steel. She received her MFA from Radford University, where she studied sculpture under Charlie Brouwer, and has since built a career that spans international residencies, large-scale public works, and leadership roles within arts institutions. Early residencies in Poland and Hungary—including work produced within an active steel factory—established her enduring relationship with industrial materials and monumentality, while her time living and working in Vienna and Prague expanded her engagement with European artistic traditions and discourse.

Now based along the Chesapeake Bay, Delaney’s practice

is deeply informed by the rhythms and visual language of the coastal landscape. Her sculptures—often constructed from thin-gauge steel—balance strength with responsiveness, allowing the material to bend, resist, and ultimately collaborate in the making of each form. Drawing inspiration from bird life, tidal movement, and elemental shoreline forms, her works oscillate between the singular and the collective: monolithic vertical structures that, when grouped, suggest the quiet choreography of a flock in motion. Through this interplay of structure and fluidity, Delaney creates sculptures that feel both grounded and alive, rooted in place yet animated by a sense of continuous movement.
